HELEN SCHULMAN’IN KALEME ALDIĞI  SAHİLDE BİR GÜN ADLI  ROMANINDA GEÇEN PARÇALANAN EVLİLİĞİN VE 11 EYLÜL OLAYLARININ İLİŞKİSİ

New York'ta ailelerin çoğu yaşam tarzlarını değiştirdi.

New York'ta yaşayan Helen Schulman tarafından yazılmıştır.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE  9/11 ATTACKS AND THE DISINTEGRATING MARRIAGE IN THE A DAY AT THE BEACH BY HELEN SCHULMAN

In the novel, the main characters are Gergard and Suzannah Falktopf and their child named Nikolai. The marriage of Gerhard and Suzannah Falktopf is in trouble when the 9/11 attacks happen. This tragedy strikes on the year of  2001. When the plane crash into the twin towers the family find themselves in a indefinite space suddenly. On the one hand, the author of the book, Helen Schulman tries to show the psychological sides of the disintegrating marriage of the Falktopf couple. On the other hand, Helen Schulman reveals the cultural aspects of the attacks which happen in a certain September day, 2001. Briefly, this novel tells the events surrounded by one of the darkest events in the history of America with its genre of psychological fiction. In this study, it is going to be evaluated the relationships between the 9/11 attacks and the disintegrating marriage of the Falktopf Family in the A Day At The Beach By Helen Schulman.

It can be said as a brief summary of the plot in the book that the  main characters are Gerhard and Suzannah Falktopf. Gerhard is a famous choreographer and his wife Suzannah is a dancer. They have a child named Nikolai. The husband Gerhard is more interesting than his wife Suzannah because Suzannah is bathetic, or whiny. That is, she has no interest of just herself, not her child. Also, she does not realize her husband cheating on her constantly. One day, they see one of twin towers on fire through their window. Gerhard insists on the go away from the city, New York immediately. Then,  he heads for his car and the bank. He wants to withdraw the money from the bank. While doing this, he comes across the French woman Martine and her child. The husband of the French woman Marine is going to the World Trade Center. Gerhard takes the woman and the child with himself to near her husband in World Trade Center. Martine fears that the worst thing is about the happening. It can be said something about the beach that the beach is beautiful and its locals are dazed due to the terrorism attacks. Suzannah and Gerhard goes to their own different way for this fateful and bitter day. Suzannah is confronted by the disability of her child Nikolai and some sides of her disintegrating marriage. Briefly, the Falktopf family is confronting of their disable child and their disintegrating marriage in the future through the novel. This book is a interior, psychological fiction novel in general.

The importance World Trade Center is that it is only international institution deals with the regulations of the trade between nations globally. Its some functions are to liberalize trade, to provide some definite atmosphere for the nations to negotiate the agreements of trading, and to settle the disputes which happen in the agreements. On September 11, 2001, some activists, nearly twenty people, seized the four airplanes when the al-Qaeda has a Islamic radical meeting. These activists carried out the suicide attacks by making some targets including the U.S.A. The two of the planes are flown to the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York.  And, the twin towers are collapsed. The third plane hit the Pentagon and the fourth plane crashed in a somewhere in Pennsylvania. These activists caused the American People to fight the psychological war of these terrorism attacks. Nearly 3.000 people as the activists caused these attacks were murdered. (Fitzpatrick, 2011)

As in the novel, American families were affected in every form immediately after this attack. Some of the effects of terrorist attacks on families were severe and urgent or acute which last few hours and may be lasting throughout days. There are even long term effects that some of these long term effects are still on going. Briefly, this terrorist attacks play a central role in the trauma experience both in parents and their children as in the novel.

All nations have strong state structure of security which is ranging from a state to a state in their communities. At the same time, there is a situation that governments have a possibility that the  tomorrows of every state will be the same as their tomorrows. Some negative events in states or governments may cause to change these points. If it is looked at the novel, the family as one of the American families deeply affected by the terrorist attacks that is dramatized as a psychological fiction genre. In general, some American families directly affected such as being exposed to the deaths of their family members. Or, they witnessed the events directly and changed their places of living. For the American Government, the government’s sense of security has shaken and restrictions have changed because of the attacks of September, 11. In the New York, most of the families have to have changed their way of live. While some of them moved out of their homeland, some of them become refugees in their homeland or their regions. Just very few people manage to being injured because of the attacks. (Powers & O’Donnel, 2009)

In addition to the being disintegrating marriage of the couple Falktopf in the novel, the confrontation with disabled Nikolai is one of the biggest costs of this attack. As a character in the book Nikolai adds some negativity to the fault lines of his family life. In an article about the mental, behavioural, psychological health of the people, especially adolescents says that people usually predict what they will experience during the day and try to implement the rest of the planned or unplanned rituals of the day when they wakes up mornings by themselves or with the help of an alarm. At this time, the perception of the control mechanism is healthy and it provides calmness psychologically. Life is full of positive and negative surprises. The 11 September attacks are a negative surprise for both the Falktopf family in the novel and the American families or people in real history. As in the novel, these attacks amazed the world as well as America. Some people are paralyzed for years while some people seem not to affected initially. As it can be seen from the book that the child named Nikolai deeply affected and was shaken as well as the Falktopf family. They are mentally worn, especially in terms of stress. The stress causes badly the Nikolai to be disabled. ( Grunberg, 2009; Berger, 2009 )

The family spends the day at the beach because they have to. They witness the tower on fire through their window. So, as well as the towers on fire, their home collapsed. That’s why, they spend the terrible twenty four hours at the beach. They remain all the day as refugees outside their homes. This aspect of the plot caused the book to be named as A Day At The Beach. If it is thought that the psychology of a family especially if it is a small adolescent when they remain under the influence of such a national attack, their stress is immeasurable. The case of being disable of Nikolai cause extra stress both for his mother and his father. This bad event has revealed the impact on the main characters in the book. In addition to the family described in the book, after this true historical cross-section there must have been more anger and desire for revenge among men especially, but women and children are included to this. ( Morgan, 2009)

At the end of the book, especially father Gerhard believed in that day at the beach. Immediately after the terrorist attacks happened, he took the phone with a hope. Then, he dialled the numbers of the people at the tower on fire. He tried to reach them. When he was doing this, his wife Suzannah witnessed the bitter pain on his face. The reason behind his inability to achieve, according to the Gerhard, was that if they were alive they would live and somehow they would pick up the phone. Since they did not answer the phone, the fact that they were not alive dragged Gerhard and his wife Suzannah into indefinite pain deeply. At the end of the day Gerhard fall asleep on the shoulders of his wife. The family were deeply affected by the terrorist attacks and they were very tired. Finally, Gerhard believed the day which was formed differently by 11 September attacks at the beach. This narrative is shaped, too.

The relationship between the event in the novel and the real event in the recent history is handled by the author Helen Schulman in a psychological fiction style. The historical event and its effects are explained in the book one by one for the readers. It can be said that the section describing the moment of explosion affected the readers with a single breath, or rather should be shaken because of the source or origin of what is described is a real historical event. In addition to the American Foreign Policy, other nations are also known to be affected by this September 11 attacks. The fear traffickers who have tried to attract such attention in world history or economy have caused a deep wound in society and especially in families. The stress experienced with this terrorist attack, becoming low of the life qualities revealed by the author in the novel.

In conclusion, this novel has brought a voice to be within the framework of the historic event mentioned before in this study. It can be said as the content of the novel that there is a family and its members Gerhard, Suzannah and Nikolai are affected by the September 11 attacks in 2001. All of them are confronting their disintegrating life such as being disabled of Nikolai, the son or the disintegrating marriage of the couple Falktopf, Gerhard and Suzannah Falktopf. Such provocations in a state do not only affect the state . These also affect every individual lives in that state administration. Quality of life changes, increases or decreases . The sanctions which are imposed as a result of the attacks vary according to the attacks. Therefore, people who are affected by the attacks start to experience effects which are lasting for days or permanently. At first, these people become victims of the stress. In short, these points are directly experienced by them and this is inevitable. In this part of the study , it can be said that the stress and some bad things experienced by the Falktopf family as a result of the terrorist attacks are the exact examples of the September 11 attacks in the recent history. Family is the smallest unit of the society. It is impossible for families to escape without being affected because every event happens under state administration concerns the society. Stress, or a psychological or physiological disorder, or death is one of the major effects can be seen on people. The internal influences of people may be leaving their countries in such attacks threaten their home and the reflection of this obligation to their psychologies. As in the novel, the terrorism caused the Falktopf family to be disintegrated and the marriage is affected badly. This novel first published in 2007. It was written by Helen Schulman who lives in New York.
