THE DIFFICULTIES OF TEACHING ENGLISH IN TURKEY

            Hi my dear Turkish readers!!!

             I am a foreigner in Turkey for 11 years and what is more awful I’m a foreign English teacher here. At first sight, we are all human beings and this means a lot in common. But in fact it turns out that we are different and everything around is not like us. It causes unforeseen life, psychological and professional difficulties. At the beginning of my living in Turkey I sometimes wanted just to scream: “Turkish people, I am the same as you are and I really want to make friends with you!”

            In this essay I’d like to share with you what difficulties I have experienced over the years of my work in Turkish private schools. The research considering this topic is also a comparative education research.

            Though Turkish children know the value of learning foreign languages I still find it very difficult to teach English here and I suppose the main reason is the traditional hostility to everything “foreign”. No matter how you teach the children are still suspicious to you moreover when you speak to them in an incomprehensible language and treat you like an alien. This fact prevents the successful process of learning English and becomes very offensive sometimes.

            We should consider the linguistic differences as well.

            Another challenge I noticed in teaching process in Turkey was the lack of flexibility in the learning style of the students which cannot be changed even for the better. The only thing that can be done with it is to adapt yourself to how it goes here. But in this case we’re wasting our valuable time what is sometimes disastrous. In addition to this, there is a gentle teaching mode of teaching that also causes a powerful slowdown in educational process. Turkish schools for some reasons do not load children with work till the full level of their capabilities. Over time, the simplification of the level of teaching materials can lead to complete brain atrophy, inability to think at all and it can negatively affect that “learning style” of the students.

            I’m absolutely sure that insufficient self-confidence of the students greatly complicates the teaching process either.

            In my opinion a huge harm to the teaching English in Turkey is caused also by the fact that Turkey is not a multilingual country (unfortunately!!!). This hinders learners in their mastering and teachers in their teaching English easily and in a shorter time. Moreover it puts a team of learners of Turkey at a great disadvantage at the global level and is already becoming a pressing matter in here.

            So I can’t say I’ve had the best teaching experience in Turkey so far. The private schools kids I was teaching before could care less and they were very disrespectful. But now, I can’t say that this is the case with the students I’m teaching now at SAFA college. The students at this college do respect people who teach them even though they know that there is someone from the other planet. I don’t feel now “the traditional hostility” to everything which is and everyone who is foreign any more. I hope a white stripe has opened for me in this country.

            Nevertheless Turkey is a wonderful country and things will change for better in education also but it will take time.

TÜRKİYE'DE İNGİLİZCE ÖĞRETMENİN ZORLUKLARI

            Merhaba sevgili Türk okuyucularım!!!

            11 yıldır Türkiye'de yabancıyım ve daha da kötüsü burada yabancı bir İngilizce öğretmeniyim. İlk bakışta, hepimiz insanız ve bu pek çok ortak nokta anlamına geliyor. Ama bu durum, aslında farklı olduğumuz ve etrafımızdaki her şeyin bizim gibi olmadığına dönüşür. Bu da öngörülemeyen yaşam, psikolojik ve mesleki zorluklara neden olmaktadır. Türkiye'de hayatımın başlangıcında bazen sadece "Türk milleti, ben de sizin gibiyim ve gerçekten sizinle arkadaş olmak istiyorum!" diye bağırmak istedim.

            Bu yazıda, Türk özel okullarında çalıştığım yıllar boyunca yaşadığım zorlukları sizlerle paylaşmak istiyorum. Bu konuyu ele alan araştırma aynı zamanda bir karşılaştırmalı eğitim araştırmasıdır.

            Türk çocukları yabancı dil öğrenmenin değerini bilse de burada İngilizce öğretmeyi hala çok zor buluyorum ve bunun ana nedeninin “yabancı” olan her şeye geleneksel düşmanlık olduğunu düşünüyorum. Çocuklara nasıl öğretirseniz öğretin, üstelik onlarla anlaşılmaz bir dille konuştuğunuzda ve size bir uzaylı gibi davrandığınızda hala sizden şüpheleniyorlar. Bu gerçek, başarılı İngilizce öğrenme sürecini engeller ve bazen çok rahatsız edici hale gelir.

            Dil farklılıklarını da dikkate almalıyız.

            Türkiye'de öğretim sürecinde fark ettiğim bir diğer zorluk ise, öğrencilerin öğrenme stilinde daha iyiye doğru değiştirilemeyen esnekliğin olmamasıydı. Bununla yapılabilecek tek şey, kendinizi buraya nasıl gittiğine adapte etmektir. Ancak bu durumda, bazen felaket olan değerli zamanımızı boşa harcıyoruz. Buna ek olarak, eğitim sürecinde de güçlü bir yavaşlamaya neden olan yumuşak bir öğretim şekli vardır. Türk okulları bazı nedenlerden dolayı çocuklara yeteneklerinin sonuna kadar iş yüklemiyor. Zamanla, öğretim materyalleri seviyesinin basitleştirilmesi hiç düşünememeye, beyin atrofisini (körelme) tamamlamaya neden olabilir ve öğrencilerin bu “öğrenme stilini” olumsuz yönde etkileyebilir.

            Öğrencilerin özgüven eksikliğinin de öğretim sürecini büyük ölçüde zorlaştırdığına kesinlikle eminim.

            Türkiye'nin çok dilli bir ülke olmaması da (maalesef!!!) bence Türkiye'de İngilizce öğretimine büyük zarar veriyor. Bu, öğrenenlerin ustalaşmasını, öğretmenlerin ise İngilizceyi daha kolay ve daha kısa sürede öğretmesini engeller. Üstelik Türkiye'nin öğrenen bir ekibini küresel düzeyde büyük bir dezavantaja sokuyor ve bu kitle şimdiden burada acil bir konu haline geliyor.

            Bu yüzden şu ana kadar Türkiye'de en iyi öğretmenlik deneyimine sahip olduğumu söyleyemem. Daha önce ders verdiğim özel okul çocukları daha az umursarlardı ve çok saygısızlardı. Ama şimdi Safa Kolej’inde ders verdiğim öğrenciler için durumun böyle olduğunu söyleyemem. Bu kolejdeki öğrenciler, diğer gezegenden birinin olduğunu bilseler bile, onlara öğreten insanlara saygı duyuyorlar. Artık yabancı olan her şeye ve herkese karşı “geleneksel düşmanlık” hissetmiyorum. Umarım bu ülkede benim için beyaz bir şerit açılmıştır.

            Yine de Türkiye harika bir ülke ve eğitimde de işler daha iyiye gidecek ama bu zaman alacaktır.
