HOW TO IMPROVE WORD KNOWLEDGE FOR THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE (ENGLISH) EXAM?

Although some students make the mistake of thinking the grammar as the most important part of the exam, arguably the most important part of the exam is vocabulary. While a student with poor vocabulary has great problems by not understanding what she is reading in the exam, a student with a good vocabulary can easily solve many questions even if her grammar knowledge is poor. Because the basic element of reading comprehension is not grammar but words. Vocabulary exercises should start as early as possible and continue every day without interruption until the time of the exam. What makes vocabulary difficult is the unlimited volume of vocabulary knowledge. As we know, we constantly learn new words even in our native language, and sometimes we forget the words we know. It is quite normal for this case to occur in a foreign language. Foreign language teachers, who have studied English for years and are still studying, learn new words every day, forget the words they have learned and remember them again. Therefore, there is a lifelong vocabulary learning situation for all foreign language students. If so, the most useful thing we can do is to do the activities leading us both learn and practice words passively, as well as actively studying vocabulary.

 

1) Learning by grouping words according to their suffixes and origins.

Learning words according to the attachment and origin information allows you to learn sometimes 5-10-20 sometimes even more words at a time with a small origin. In addition, it is very useful in guessing the meaning of words you have never seen yet. 2) Reading, reading, reading.

The most important way to learn vocabulary is reading. Reading improves our ability to guess the meanings of words because we see the word in context, enables us to learn new words, allows us to reinforce the words we know, and helps us to see the different uses of the words we know. For this, we should never stop reading. Not only printed books, but also reading e-books and even using e-readers will contribute greatly at this point.

3) Keeping a wordbook.

It is very important to keep a small printed notebook or to use a mobile phone or similar device for the same purpose. The wordbook provides us with many benefits, such as tracking the progress of our vocabulary development, seeing how many words we have learned, and understanding how many of those words we remember. Using a small notebook or mobile phone enables us to do these activities not only at home or at school, but also everywhere in the car, bus, subway, in short. If we can study words in the bus, service and similar places, we will spare extra time for other subjects for our work at home.

4) Using Postits.

A language student's locker, desk, and all other household items that he / she uses daily should be filled with post-its. If we do this, we will passively learn or repeat words while surfing the internet, reading a book, organizing our closet, in short, in every routine activity we do in our room or at home. This also allows us to spare time for other lessons by reducing active vocabulary studies. What we need to pay attention to here is to write a word in a post-it and make it stand out in large fonts.

5) Using smartphone apps.

There are many smartphone applications for vocabulary learning. These applications provide many opportunities such as dictionary, word tests, flash-cards, reading activities. Using these applications in our free time during the day contributes to our vocabulary learning.

6) Putting words on the background of our phone and computer screen.

We can do this through a program or simply by writing it down on a piece of paper and taking a photograph. The important thing here is to use not many words, but few words such as 5-6 words in order to make the words catch our attention, and replace these words with new ones regularly. The most logical thing to do in word choice is to choose the words that we have the most difficulty with and forget a lot.

 

7) Watching English news channels.

Headlines in news channels are a very good way of learning words. The fact that the language of the news is very close to the language of the exam is another advantage.

What resources can I use to improve my vocabulary for dders study purposes?

Students who are at or around 20-40 right answers at the beginner level can use resources such as Akındil Reading Plus, İrem Yayıncılık Passagework Word Monster, Yediiklim Lys-5 Words, YDS Publishing Lys-Language Word. In addition, resources such as Remzi Hodja's word lists, which are provided free of charge on the internet, can be used.

Intermediate and advanced students with 50-70 right answers and around can use free resources such as Akındil Reading Words, İrem Yayıncılık YDS words in 60 days and Remzi Hodja's YDS word lists. Apart from that, students at this level can use all YDS-focused word resources.

 

YABANCI DİL (İNGİLİZCE) SINAVI İÇİN KELİME BİLGİSİ NASIL GELİŞTİRİLMELİ?

Her ne kadar bazı öğrenciler sınavın en önemli parçasını gramer sanmak hatasına düşse de sınavın tartışmasız en önemli parçası kelime bilgisidir. Kelime bilgisi güçlü olmayan bir öğrenci sınavda okuduğunu anlayamayarak büyük problemler yaşarken, iyi bir kelime bilgisine sahip bir öğrenci gramer bilgisi zayıf olsa bile birçok soruyu rahatlıkla çözebilir. Çünkü okuduğunu anlamanın temel unsuru gramer değil kelimedir. Kelime çalışmaları mümkün olan en erken zamanda başlamalı ve sınav zamanına kadar aralıksız bir şekilde her gün devam etmelidir. Kelime çalışmayı zor yapan şey kelime bilgisinin sınırının olmamasıdır. Bildiğimiz gibi ana dilimizde bile sürekli yeni kelimeler öğreniyoruz ve bazen bildiğimiz kelimeleri unutuyoruz. Bu durumun yabancı dilde de gerçekleşmesi ise gayet normaldir. Yıllarca İngilizce eğitimi almış ve halen almakta olan yabancı dil öğretmenleri de her gün yeni kelimeler öğrenip, öğrendiği kelimeleri unutup bunları tekrar hatırlıyorlar. Dolayısıyla tüm yabancı dil öğrencileri için ömür boyu sürecek bir kelime öğrenme durumu mevcuttur. Madem öyle, yapacağımız en faydalı şey aktif bir şekilde kelime çalışmanın yanı sıra, pasif bir şekilde kelime öğrenmemizi ve pratik yapmamızı da sağlayacak uygulamalarda bulunmaktadır.

 

1) Eklerine ve kökenlerine göre kelimeleri gruplandırarak öğrenmek. Ek ve köken bilgisine göre kelime öğrenmek küçük bir kelime kökeni ile tek seferde bazen 5-10-20 bazen daha da fazla kelimeyi öğrenmenizi sağlar. Buna ek olarak, henüz hiç görmediğiniz kelimelerin de anlamlarını tahmin etme konusunda oldukça faydalıdır. 2) Okumak, okumak, okumak.

 Kelime öğreniminin en önemli yolu okuma yapmaktır. Okuma yapmak kelimeyi bir bağlam içerisinde gördüğümüz için kelimelerin anlamlarını tahmin etme becerimizi artırır, yeni kelimeler öğrenmemizi sağlar, bildiğimiz kelimeleri pekiştirmemize olanak verir ve bildiğimiz kelimelerin farklı kullanımlarını görmek adına bize fayda sağlar. Bunun için okuma yapmaya asla ara vermememiz gerekir. Sadece basılı kitaplar değil aynı zamanda e-kitaplar okumak hatta e-okuyucular kullanmak bu noktada fazlasıyla katkı sağlayacaktır.

3) Bir kelime defteri tutmak. 

Basılı küçük bir defter tutmak veya aynı amaçla cep telefonu ve benzeri bir araç kullanmak gayet önemlidir. Kelime defteri bize kelime gelişimimizin ilerleyişini izlemek, ne kadar kelime öğrendiğimizi görmek, bu kelimelerin ne kadarını hatırladığımızı anlamak gibi birçok fayda sağlar. Küçük bir defter veya cep telefonu kullanmak ise bu çalışmaları sadece evde veya okulda değil arabada, otobüste, metroda kısacası her yerde rahatlıkla yapmamızı sağlar. Kelime çalışmasını otobüste, serviste ve benzeri yerlerde yapabilirsek evdeki çalışmalarımız için diğer konulara ekstra vakit ayırmış oluruz.

4) Postitler kullanmak.

Bir dil öğrencisinin dolabı, masası ve günlük kullandığı diğer tüm ev eşyaları post-itler ile dolu olmalı. Bunu yaparsak internette gezinirken, kitap okurken, dolabımızı düzenlerken kısacası odamızda veya evde yaptığımız her rutin aktivitede bir yandan pasif olarak kelime öğrenmiş veya tekrar etmiş oluruz. Bu da yine aktif kelime çalışmalarından kısarak diğer derslere vakit ayırmamızı sağlar. Burada dikkat etmemiz gereken şey bir post-ite bir kelime yazmak ve büyük puntolarla dikkat çekmelerini sağlamaktır.

5) Akıllı telefon uygulamaları kullanmak. 

Kelime öğrenimi için birçok akıllı telefon uygulaması mevcuttur. Bu uygulamalar sözlük, kelime testleri, flash-cardlar, okuma aktiviteleri gibi birçok imkan sağlamaktadır. Bu uygulamaları gün içerisinde boş vakitlerimizde kullanmak kelime öğrenimimize katkı sağlar.

6) Telefonumuzun ve bilgisayar ekranımızın arka planına kelimeler koymak. 

Bunu bir program aracılığıyla veya en basit haliyle bir kağıda yazıp fotoğrafını çekerek yapabiliriz. Burada önemli olan kelimelerin dikkatimizi çekmesini sağlamak için çok kelime değil 5-6 kelime gibi az kelime kullanmak ve düzenli olarak bu kelimeleri yenileriyle değiştirmektir. Kelime seçiminde yapılabilecek en mantıklı şey ise en çok zorlandığımız ve çok unuttuğumuz kelimeleri tercih etmektir.

7) İngilizce haber kanalları izlemek. 

Haber kanallarındaki başlıklar kelime öğrenmenin çok iyi bir yöntemdir. Haber dilinin sınav diline fazlasıyla yakın olması ise ayrı bir avantajdır.

 

Peki ders çalışma amacıyla kelime bilgimi geliştirmek için hangi kaynakları kullanabilirim? 

Başlangıç seviyesinde 20-40 net arasında veya bu civarda olan öğrenciler Akındil Reading Plus, İrem Yayıncılık Passagework Kelime Canavarı, Yediiklim Lys-5 Kelimeler, YDS Publishing Lys-Dil Kelime gibi kaynakları kullanabilirler. Buna ek olarak internette ücretsiz sağlanan Remzi hocanın kelime listeleri gibi kaynaklar da kullanılabilir.

Orta ve ileri seviyede 50-70 net ve civarlarında olan öğrenciler ise Akındil Reading Words, İrem yayıncılık 60 günde YDS kelimeleri ve yine Remzi hocanın YDS kelime listeleri gibi internette ücretsiz sağlanan kaynakları kullanabilirler. Bunun dışında bu seviyedeki öğrenciler YDS odaklı tüm kelime kaynaklarını kullanabilirler.
